Just 60 days to go to the 2017 edition of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites, and the moment when 4,017 heroes will give battle on the two designated routes, one of 86 kilometres with a challenging 4,500 metres of altitude difference and the other of 60 kilometres with 3,200 metres of altitude difference, both around the Sella Group in the splendid Dolomites landscape, it a UNESCO World Heritage. In these days the actual routes are still covered by snow in the higher reaches but the spring weather which is quickly becoming hotter and sunnier should clear all away in no time at all.
To keep check of the situation it is possible to see the webcam coverage by going direct to the Val Gardena webcam at the following link:

Move fast as numbers are limited and will soon be sold out and it is enough to book your hospitality package at a hotel of your choice with a B&B, half-board or apartment formula, and then just like magic all will be in place for a weekend of dreams with a place at the race start line.
Details of the establishments talking part in the initiative can be seen by going to the following link:
HERO RACE START NUMBER & VACATION PACKAGE NICELY COMBINED
1 + 1 don’t always make 2 for the sum of the two parts is sometimes greater. Even though the registrations for the HERO are now closed, the maximum number having been reached, there is still the opportunity to take advantage of the solution where a race number is obtained though the booking of a 3 day vacation. You can look the hospitality package in one of the accommodation establishments taking oart in the initiative for HERO 2017 and live the weekend as a ‘hero’. Note: also this initiative is valid only until the total number of race places assigned is filled. Yes, even though mathematics is a science in this instance the sum gifts you far more than a standard weekend for it entitles you to experience the unforgettable emotions of a HERO weekend. In the Dolomites.
HERO IN SUPPORT OF THE POPULATIONS STRUCK BY EARTHQUAKES
As you well know central Italy was hit hard by devasting earthquakes last summer. We wish to show our support for the people of Abruzzo, Umbria, Marche and Lazio by providing some real help so they can build their lives again. This is why the annual HERO charity initiative will be dedicated to a fund to assist the areas badly hit. How to help? It’s very simple: by purchasing one of the 200 “charity” race numbers at a cost of 200 Euro one can have a starting place at the HERO Sudtirol Dolomites 2017. It is a great chance to become a HERO for a day and contribute to those who have needed to show heroic spirit in these past months. As for the HEROes coming from the areas affected we dedicate the HERO Charity Fashion Night and our HERO Great Finale evening!: during the prizegiving of Saturday 17 June we will stand side by side with them in a show of respect and support.
BEST WISHES TO ALL HERO LADIES!
It is said that “Behind every successful man there is always a great woman” and on this very special day we can do no other than emphasise the fact! In support of our male HEROes there are many mothers, wives, and girlfriends who demonstrate great patience and encouragement as the men prepare for the big race and their support never wains and is fundamental to the cause. And of course we need to mention in the same voice all our female athletes, real heroines, who meticulously prepare for the race day and overcome all the strains and anxieties which are part and parcel of the race build-up.
HERO STANDING ALONGSIDE THE POPULATIONS HIT BY THE EARTHQUAKE
Central Italy was struck by a devastating earthquake at the end of August, an earthquake which not only wrecked towns and villages but hit hard the spirit of the population of those parts, they people who have a strong desire to remain and rebuild their lives in the Appenine area. Unfortunately fate dealt a heavy blow and the situation was further complicated by heavy snowfalls and consequent disruption. The mountain area is very different from our own but is equally fascinating and full of history. The experience our friends down in Abruzzo, Umbria, Marche and Lazio are living impacts on us each and every day and in these times of pain and difficulty we wish to contribute, not only with our thoughts and prayers but in a concrete way so as to help regenerate the area and stand side by side with the people there.
HERO CLINIC 2017: THE SCHOOL FOR HEROES!
Every hero has also a weak point but as in the comics our heroes find the strength and the way to overcome any obstacle and to reach their objective. To accompany you on your way as you prepare for the HERO Südtirol Dolomites 2017, we again this year propose to you the much appreciated HERO CLINIC, four days in which, accompanied by our mtb expert guides, you will be able to discover the features of the route, try out bends and downhills, and test your resistance on the demanding uphills. From June 1 to June 4 at Selva Val Gardena we can accompany you all the way so as to help you achieve your aim to become a Real HERO!

AND YOU? WILL YOU BECOME A #REALHERO?
Who as a child did not dream about being a hero? Superman, Spiderman, Batman... We imagined ourselves in exciting adventures, at times fighting to save the world. Yes, they were the dreams of our childhood, stories read from comics, our brave heroes fighting against the odds, but of course they were all fiction stories originating from the graphic artist’s pen. Reality is far different. Now that you are an adult you have the chance to become a real hero. Not just a hero for your daily actions but by pursuing an interest in sport, an interest in your own right. Do you want to become a hero? A real HERO? Again this year we challenge you to become so by participating in the toughest mountain bike race which the world knows, it organised in the magical setting of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage. It is an opportunity to test yourself to the full, to push yourself to the limit, to fix demanding objectives to reach. It is in simple words the chance of a lifetime to fulfil that childhood dream and to become a #realHERO. We look forward to welcoming you to Selva Val Gardena for the race on June 17 – welcome to the 2017 edition of the HERO Südtirol Dolomites.

A HERO WOMEN’S LOUNGE FOR THE FIRST TIME
We have come up with a new initiative aimed specifically at our heroines and all their girlfriends who come along to assist at the HERO weekend. In fact at the Bike and Tech EXPO area keep an eye open for the HERO Women’s Lounge, a zone dedicated entirely to females attending the HERO and intended to respond to every wish. One newcomer to the HERO Bike Festival 2017 is an E-bike initiative – a great way to enjoy the mountains with a little electric support! To go about this solution you need to book your stay in one of the accommodation establishments taking part in this HERO 2017 initiative, asking for the special hospitality solution, and then you will be able to enjoy your long weekend as a 'hero'. Careful however for again this initiative has a limited number of places. Do not delay and do not be disappointed. We look forward to seeing you at Eurobike from 31 August to 4 September 2016 in the Foyer West, stand no. 213.
And the winning number is ... !
Guess what the lucky number of the year is next year? We’ll give you three clues: there will be 4,017 bikers taking part, it will of course be the year 2017, and the date to put in your diary will be 17 June. All numbers easy to remember and it is already time to think ahead to the eight edition of the HERO and which will take place on the third Saturday of June. Here in the Dolomites we are already at work to make the event even more appealing and fascinating than ever before. The work we do will certainly be driven by our own experience and ideas but we want you to contribute too and for this we ask you to fill in the questionnaire which follows on in this Newsletter.
Be sure to make a note of the date so you also can start focusing on your preparation to come. Where do you usually make a note of such important things – on the kitchen calendar or in your desk diary or do you have other places where you keep your HERO references? Why not take a photo to show us the ‘never to be forgotten’ solution you have found and send it to us or post it on facebook and the sender of the most original photo might find himself or herself receiving a prize to celebrate next year’s race!
What do you think of the HERO?
To improve and to keep on improving has always been a key factor for us in organising the HERO. Right from the beginning in 2010 we set ourselves the objective to get better not only in number terms but in a qualitative sense: we always wanted to organise the best bike race in the world for the highest number of bikers possible… To help us maintain our objective and strive for an unbeatable excellence we need to have your opinion, your thoughts on what the HERO means to you, and how you think it can be made an even better event. We have prepared a questionnaire, which can be completed anonymously and which will only take up a few minutes of your time, indicating your opinion on the various elements which come together to making up the HERO Südtirol Dolomites: your opinion, good or bad, is precious advice for us! Thank you.
What a story the HERO is, and there’s no better person to tell the story than you yourself
If the HERO were just a race we would not be here right now in the middle of summer dedicating so much time to it. The truth of the matter is that the HERO is something special and means so much to so many. We realised this last year when we asked you to tell us your HERO stories, and what stories they were, for you opened up and told us of episodes full of emotion – sad stories at times, others of dreams being fulfilled, and some full of humour and happy happy memories. How difficult it was to choose just a dozen to publish in the HERO Times, and now we feel that there is still so much to tell that we ask you to contribute again. We ask you to write a page on something which happened to you, something you experienced, either before, during or after the HERO, and which you would wish to share with other HERO enthusiasts. Send it to email@example.com: let’s see if yours is one of the chosen ones.
A DOZEN HEROES FACE THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
There are thousands of stories of heroes. Those who wanted to win the race, those who wanted to improve on a personal best time, and those who wanted at all costs to approach the HERO challenge as a group of friends. The latter is true of a dozen bikers from Bergamo who were determined to cross the finish line together. Did they succeed in so doing? You can find out by following the special feature programme on Sky Icarus, dedicated to this particular challenge. The programme follows the riders as they climb the dreaded uphills and risk life and limb on the downhills. The filming shows pain and suffering but also a sense of togetherness and support for each other – a true expression of friendship as it should be. A group of 12, just like the disciples were 12, but this time round there was no traitor in the midst.
Do not miss the programme on SKY Sport 2 (Monday 11 at 18.30, tuesday 12 at 06.00, 12.30 and 20.30, wednesday 13 at 10.00, saturday 16 at 02.00 and sunday 17 at 06.00), on Sky Sport 3 (tuesday 12 at 20.30, wednesday 13 at 09.30, thursday 14 at 06.00, 09.00 and 20.00, saturday 16 at 06.30 and sunday 17 at 18.30), Sky Sport PLUS (monday 11 at 01.00 and thursday 14 at 18.30) and Sky Sport MIX (tuesday 12 at 09.00, thursday 14 at 09.30 and saturday 16 at 23.00).

A future HERO one might become and it is for this reason that we have created the Kids on Wheels HERO Academy approach. It is an initiative which we have studied so as to bring kids and youngsters generally close to the sport of mtb and to inculcate in them those necessary notions for a safe and enjoyable use of bikes in general and on paths and tracks in particular. We have three levels of KIDS on Wheels, ranging from Beginner Riders to Advanced Riders, an on to Expert Riders. 4,016 TIMES THANKS!
What to say? Thank you sounds so little. To see four thousand faces spatted with mud but crystal clear in the emotion expressed for having achieved something special fills us with joy. Thanks to you for having believed in two things: in our race and above all in yourselves. The HERO above all is a representation of the fact that that a dream can be realised and to do everything possible to make sure that it is. The banner under which you bikers pass at the end of the race may not be the most important life achievement but it is certainly an objective achieved which can light up our daily lives and something worthwhile to believe in. Yes, to conquer the HERO sturdy legs and a calm mind are required but above all a courageous heart is essential. To be there in the finish area together is to hear the sound of many beating hearts, almost a sense of unison, we with you, and it is for this that we wish to say thank you for being the stars of A SPECIAL DAY.
HERO TIMES' IS THE MAGAZINE YOU NEED TO KEEP
